The top domains are fixed. There
are several top domains,like ".edu" for educational sites such as universities
and colleges, and ".gov" for government departments". The most popular
domains are the ".com" extensions used for commercial sites, and remain
the most prestigious internet addresses. Therefore, ".com" will be probably
be the top domain of interest to you.For example, to find a large company
one can locate a site with ease by typing "netscape.com" or microsoft.com"
and be reasonably assured of finding it.

Other top level
domain names are the ".net" and ".org" extensions. "net" is similar
to ."com" but not as prestigious ".org" is available only to non-commercial
organisations and cannot be used by for-profit companies.
